USC and Capital One Financial Corp. created a joint research center called the USC-Capital One Center for Responsible AI and Decision Making in Finance (CREDIF) housed under the School of Advanced Computing, a division of the Viterbi School of Engineering. The USC-Capital One Center will support research projects in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) with application to finance to be carried out by faculty members from the Viterbi School of Engineering. The center will also offer a one-year fellowship program for doctoral students and add a research component to the existing Master program in Financial Engineering. The center will host workshops and an annual joint research symposium to share outcomes and insights and facilitate the advancement of research in the use of AI and ML to solve complex financial problems as well as automate financial processes and tasks.

Center Director
Professor Petros Ioannou the Director of the USC-Capital One Center, is a renowned expert in dynamical complex systems, intelligent control and neuro adaptive networks with application to autonomous, intelligent transportation and financial systems. He is a University Professor and holds the A.V ‘Bal’ Balakrishnan Endowed Chair in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He also holds a courtesy appointment with the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Industrial Systems Engineering. He is the founder and Director of a successful Master program in Financial Engineering housed at theViterbi School of Engineering. Dr. Ioannou is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Inventors and Foreign Member of the Academia Europaea and the European Academy of Sciences, a Life Fellow of IEEE and Fellow of IFAC and AAAS.He is the author/co-author of 9 books and over 400 research papers in the areas of system theory, intelligent and adaptive control and applications and intelligent transportation systems. He is the author of the textbook Mathematics and Tools for Financial Engineering published by SIAM.As a visionary leader, Dr. Ioannou guides the USC-Capital One Center's mission to advance the application of AI and ML in finance, leveraging his deep expertise to push the boundaries of innovation in these fields. Under his leadership, the USC-Capital One Center aims to foster groundbreaking research, nurture the next generation of leaders, and develop impactful solutions for the financial industry.
